Review: Balsamiq Mockups

Mar 31st, 2009 by mike in tech

We recently began using Balsamiq Mockups to create mockups for layouts.  Due to its large built-in library of commonly used UI functions, we have been able to create layout mockups more efficiently, quickly, and clearly for both our internal projects as well as for client layout reviews.

mockups_fpaThe app is very easy to use but packs a lot under the hood.  Its main value is that it allows us to either completely forego or at least minimize the quantity of PhotoShop comps that we need to make.  Also, since it is an Adobe AIR app, it is platform agnostic, and thus, more useful than an app relegated to a specific OS. We highly recommend it.

  • I love Balsamiq mockups! Use it almost weekly!
However, software UI tools don’t seem to solve the ‘first ideas’ or ‘napkin drawings’. For some reason, I can’t bring in software until the idea is a little more clear, since all UI software (incl. Balsamiq) only allow pre-set controls.

To solve the early stages, I use:

Very fun magnetic UI widgets for prototyping on a whiteboard. You should try them!
